The last of the practical completion was installed during the first week in September - the door handles, towel rails/toilet roll holders etc. We found out that they were delayed as they had been stolen from the house a few weeks earlier and had to be reordered.
With that done, the house was technically ready for walk through.... if only the power was switched on. Our local electricity/gas company were being difficult and taking their time getting things hooked up, despite our builder requesting power and us setting up the new account over three weeks earlier! Once the power was hooked up, it was just a matter of the final paperwork coming through and having the bank release the final payment and the place would be ours!
With flights booked to the USA for September 9th, and the impending completion of the house, we had put our current place up for rent and organised a new tenant who was scheduled to move in the week we went overseas.
Unfortunately though, the final paperwork wasn't through in time for a walk-through and handover before we left, and we were STILL waiting on electricity! And so, our moving day, scheduled for the weekend before we left, turned into a giant game of Tetris in our friends garage, attempting to fit our entire house worth of furniture and boxes in there for storage for the few weeks we were overseas, ready to move into the when we got home.
We scheduled the final walk through with the builder for the day we arrived home from the USA and spent the next two nights sleeping on our mattress on the floor before adding it to our garage full of belongings the day we left for the trip, leaving the old place empty and ready for the new tenants to arrive.
